Joseph Henry Garagiola was an American baseball player and Sportscaster. He was 6ft tall and played as a catcher. Garagiola was born on February 12, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis and was friends with fellow baseball player, Yogi Berra. Their block on Elizabeth Avenue was renamed ‘Hall of Fame Place’ in 2003.
CAREER
Garagiola made his major league baseball debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1946. In his rookie season he batted 6 for 19 in five games. They ended up winning the 1946 World Series champion. He played his first game against Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Garagiola parted ways with the Cardinals in 1951. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates followed by the Chicago Cubs and later the New York Giants. Garagiola played a career total of 676 games over 9 seasons before retiring from the field in 1954. He authored the publications It’s Anybody’s Ballgame (1980) and Just Play Ball (2007).
Garagiola began his broadcasting career with KMOX radio station in 1955. He signed on with NBC television/radio in 1961. While at NBC, he called several world series games, did play-by-play announcements, provided color commentary and hosted pre-game shows. Garagiola was a regular panelist on ‘The Today Show’ and co-hosted ‘Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show’ from 1994-2002. He was honored with the Ford Frick Award in 1991 followed by the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.

Joe Garagiola passed away on March 23, 2016 at the age of 90. An official cause of death was not disclosed. Garagiola was married to ‘Audrie Rose’ from 1949 until his death in 2016. He’s survived by his wife and three children, Joe Jr., Steve and Gina.
